The Dead Internet…Definitely a Conspiracy Theory or Maybe Not According to Wikipedia and Sam Altman

As of September 15, 2025, Wikipedia posits:

“The dead Internet theory is a conspiracy theory which asserts that since around 2016 the Internet has consisted mainly of bot activity and automatically generated content manipulated by algorithmic curation, as part of a coordinated and intentional effort to control the population and minimize organic human activity.”

Weird stuff right? But Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, as reported on September 10, 2025 by Time Magazine remarked:

“i never took the dead internet theory that seriously but it seems like there are really a lot of LLM-run twitter accounts now”

When you start looking you can see this idea is alive and well in Psychology Today, Forbes, Popular Mechanics, CNET, Galaxy, and has had a website dedicated to the topic since 2023.

For more context there is interesting discussion of the dead internet on Neil deGrasse Tyson‘s StarTalk:
